The process
After discussions with Neil, a team development program was put in place and one-on-one coaching was provided for individual team members.
“A first step was to establish some ground rules on how the group would work together, then we looked at individual needs,” Carolyn explains. “Neil helped each team member to identify their issues and come to their own decision about what path they wanted to take.
“Achieving a better work/life balance emerged as a big issue for some team members. Others were not happy with their career choice. In some instances issues in their private lives were impacting on their workplace relationships.
“Neil was non-threatening and understanding. He ensured each person was heard, their work and home issues were aired and he helped them find their own way forward. Neil ensured his discussions with individual team members were entirely confidential and as a result everyone felt happy with the process.”
The results
That was nearly two years ago and Carolyn says that the formerly unhappy team is now a cohesive group working effectively together. “Now team members raise any concerns and issues directly with the other person concerned. There is no ‘them and us’. Neil also has passed his coaching skills on to the team leader so there is regular coaching in the workplace.
“It’s something you can’t leave to chance, particularly as new members join the team. You’ve got to keep working at it.”
Carolyn has also benefited personally from Neil’s coaching skills.
